What If ???

NASCAR's qualifying system has to change, but the answer is not easy and by the time there are changes implemented it may be too late for some teams. The current starting grid allows the top 35 in drivers points... no secret there... automatic entry. This is too many. So what is the magic number? Some folks say "make them all qualify". That would be interesting with possible disastrous results. What would happen to ratings and ticket sales if someone like Dale Jr. or Smoke failed to qualify with any consistency? Should the #35 be changed to... say 15? Or maybe there is a way to totally redesign the whole system. I am an engineer by trade so my mind automatically tries to analyze and my dad taught me at a very young age the old cliche'..."if it's not broke, don't fix it"... but the qualifying system needs fixing!

Other news... Anheuser-Busch is making plans for a Nerf style beer container.

Let 'em all race in...it is called "racing"!

Fastest 43 get to race, everybody else can go home. Have an off week, to bad. Bobble during your qualifying lap, to bad. Wreck in qualifying, to bad. Can't remember if it's to or too? My bad.

Or they could just go back to the short track days. 4 heat races, a B main and an A main. That would certainly add some excitement to the program.

I think all of NASCAR needs fixed, lol. Well we got a good track coming up. I can't wait. Maybe we all can have something to celebrate when a Hendrick driver doesn’t win.

Tell Pattyjo that next month in the NASCAR Illustrated they are going to have an article about Tony Stewart and his foundation. It will be on sale on May the 29th.

Let the fastest cars that qualify race. In golf you have to make the cut and Golf does just fine even when Tiger doesn't 'gualify' - granted that doesn't happen too much and it would be the same for the big names in NASCAR.

In short nothing.

What happened the year both Junior and Jeffy missed the Chase?

Again, in short, nothing, in fact that year had the highest TV ratings to this point.

Then it's unanimous!! Let them race. I agree.

Starla...thanks. I'll let Pattyjo know.

I would still have some number, say 20, that are in based upon standings. But 35 is too many.If more than half of the starting spots were open each week, all those deserving to make the race, would. And any driver with a legitimate chance of making the Chase would be assured of starting.

Give the top 12 an automatic in (thats NASCAR's favorite number right now). Make everybody else time their way in except the previous weeks winner. Give him a provisional. NASCAR loves those provisionals.

The Tiger comparison is different than NASCAR qualifying. Tiger gets 50% of the tourney to sink or swim. Plus Tiger never has to qualify to enter tournaments because he gets sponsor exemptions. NASCAR drivers get two laps to qualify.

I'm all for a lower number, but there has to be some safety zone.

Like I said...there is no easy answer, but there are solutions.
